Thirteen-year-old uber-archer Samantha is thrilled to qualify for Xenith, the most prestigious -- and mysterious -- Olympic training facility in the world. Much more than an athletic camp, it's a fantasyland where living dolls and the Baba Yaga abound. Plus there's Dr. Nine, a master alchemist whose magical laboratory is very well guarded indeed. But not all that glitters is Olympic gold. When dangerous secrets begin to surface, Sam must fight to expose Xenith's dark underbelly to save her friends and family...if she survives herself.

Qi Book of the Baba Yaga eBook Elizabeth A Svigar

I spent a few hours looking for the perfect book to purchase for my kindle, and then, something finally caught my eye--qi. It had a 'Dante's Inferno and Slavic mythology' kind of feel to it which I LOVED. It had everything I was looking for: romance, suspense, and fantasy, all combined in one. I knew after the first chapter I was hooked. Sam is a fabulous archer and just got accepted into Xenith Academy. She is thrust into a secret world of love, hate, and danger lurking just outside the mysterious gate to Hell. Doctor Nine knows how to turn soul energy, or qi, into gold making Moldovia a luxerious place to live. Sam soon learns--all that glitters is not gold.

Sam's reunited with her mother but something seems weird. She's hiding a secret that will rock Sam's world. Sam loves Moldovia and is excited when she meets up with her childhood best friend Eli. Sparks are flying, but he has other problems. His twin brother has been missing for over two years after he entered the secret gate leading to hell where he was attacked by an evil creature. They form a group and swear to get Jonah back even if it means going into Hell where they will all be tested.

They are led by a living doll whose witty remarks kept me laughing and entertained the entire time. This is a well crafted story that I could NOT put down. I felt like I wasn't just reading a book, but actually on a journey with Sam feeling all of her emotions and bonding with her. And I also bonded with the other charismatic characters as well. It flows fantastic and the voice is strong. This author weaves in all kinds of twists and turns that will keep you on your toes. I would definitely recommmend this book!

Qi Book of the Baba Yaga eBook Elizabeth A Svigar Reviews

Let me preface this review by saying I might not be the target audience. I enjoy fantasy and have liked lots of YA/MG books, but this was too silly for me, and I started skimming in Chapter 2 (when the doll character showed up). Though the protagonist was thirteen, this seemed like a book for a younger reader. Eight or nine maybe. The fact that the main character kept saying how crazy everything was made it seem like the author was trying to justify the fact that, yes, everything was crazy. I found it hard to suspend disbelief and get into the story.

Also, for a relatively short novel, it takes a while for the characters to explain everything that happened in the past and to get into more than setup stuff. Ultimately, it never grabbed me, and I didn't finish.

I'm giving it three stars because the writing was pretty solid and the editing sound (in that department, it's hit or miss with indie books). I liked that the author included sensory details and described events and the world well. It seems from reviews that this appealed more to others, so maybe I just wasn't the right audience.
I absolutely loved this story. Samantha is an endearing character with a feisty and bold character. I liked that she had flaws, and that made her real to me. I adored Will, the funny talking doll, a bossy little character who keeps everyone on their toes. He made me laughed my head off.

It's easy to take a dislike to the antagonist, Bianca, and I loved the love triangle and jealousy between the two girls.

This story had so many twists and turns, it had me on the edge of my seat. I had to keep reading to the very end.

I don't want to give anything away, so I won't say too much, but the plots and twists were fantastic. I highly recommend this story. I've read it over and over.

Oh, I loved the house up in the tree and that weird old Baba Yaga - even if she did look like a wicked old witch.

A fantastic read.
Velvet Ball and The Broken Fairy (Series Novel)
qi... the short title drew me in and the story kept me going. Svigar weaves a wonderful tale of sisters in a land not their own. Magic abounds throughout and draws the reader into an exciting tale of friendship, ambition and betrayal. The Baba Yaga is a particularly intriguing character that virtually comes to life before your eyes. The setting is awesome... mysterious and mystical, and definitely a place that I'd want to visit.

Svigar's wonderful imagination is clearly seen in the vivid descriptions throughout. The author's characterizations make for very believable heroes and villains. The plot is intricate and exciting, leaving the reader wondering what will happen next. The themes of friendship, loyalty, and honor are clearly set and dealt with in particularly inventive and interesting ways.

I'm not going to give away any of the plot. The story is wonderful and I consider it a MUST read for young and old alike. Kudos to Sviger! I look forward to reading more from this author.
